Out of School Programs

After Skool Kool

After Skool Kool is an out-of-school care program that provides a safe and nurturing environment for youth with developmental disabilities between the ages of 13–19. The program strives to support the development of social skills, life skills, and community access through recreational, leisure and social activities. While doing this, we are ensuring that we provide a creative and enjoyable atmosphere that encourages each person to develop to their fullest potential. Among some of After Skool Kool’s activities are community excursions, art, dance, games and visiting places like the SPCA and the Post Office.

After Skool Kool is offered Monday to Friday from 3:00–5:30 p.m. for teens ages 13–19. After Skool Kool provides transportation from the 3 local high schools (Elgin, Earl Marriot, and Semiahmoo Secondary).

After Skool Kool is also offered for kids ages 9–12 on Mondays. Please note that parents/caregivers of this age group (9-12) must provide their own transportation to the program as it is unavailable at this time.

District Wide Pro DAZE Camp

Parents asked and we responded... if you need care for your teenager on District Wide Professional Days, we are offering day camps 4 of the 6 Pro Days for the 2010/2011 school year. After Skool Kool will continue to run on District Wide Professional Days. Parents may choose to put their child in the regular day 9:00 - 3:00 ($39.00) and their fee for ASK ($19.50) will cover the extended day until 5:30 p.m.

These day camps will be run very similarly to our very fun and exciting SummerDAZE camps. If your teen is interested in great outings and activities with their peers such as trips to the Greater Vancouver Zoo, bowling, movie theatres, the Aquarium, Science World... then this is the place for them!!! Sign up for one or all of these day camps. Space is limited and registration is based on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Staffing Ratio: 3:1. As a fundraised program, we unfortunately cannot provide a higher staffing ratio. If your child requires more staffing support, please contact the Program Manager prior to registration.

WinterDAZE

WinterDAZE are fun filled day-camps over the winter break for teens 13 - 19. Your teen will have an exciting time going on adventurous outings around the lower mainland! You may sign up for one or both weeks!

Adult Night Out

Now offered Tuesday AND Thursday, how cool is that??? Are you 19 or over and want to do adult oriented activities such as... pubs, casinos, bingo, shopping, card nights, movie nights, pot-lucks? Want to do these things with other adults? If yes, then Adult Night Out is the place for you to be! It is definitely a Rec & Leisure favourite! Sign up for one or both nights. Something on either a Tuesday or Thursday evening with others your age?

African Dance & Drumming

Another Rec & Leisure FAVOURITE! Join MaObong Oku, founder of Kokoma African Heritage Dance and Drum Ensemble who teaches the Tuesday evening classes for dancing and live drumming! This class is a huge success and a ton of fun! Prepare yourself for exciting experiences that immerse you in the rhythms, dance, art and culture of Africa. You will take part in activities rich with the arts and cultural traditions of West Africa that will provide each student with the opportunity to create and learn about African fabrics, patterns, traditional face painting and cooking. Come and celebrate Arts of Africa. This semester will be performing in the Winter Extravaganza on March 4th & 5th.

B & G Combo, Boys' Night Out & Girl Power Combined

Hey guys and gals... here's Boys' Night Out and Girl Power combined into an awesome program where you'll get together and head off on adventures such as geocaching, ‘BIGGER & BETTER ,' bowling, and driving range. You'll also have a blast having in-house karaoke and potluck evenings. Worried you won't get to hang out with either just the gals, or just the guys... well the group will be having plenty of activities where the group will be split up.... For the boys, they'll hang out and play sports, listen to music, read magazines, all while having a chance to socialize and make great friends. For the gals, they'll have a blast painting their nails, applying make-up, arts and crafts and talking about girly stuff. This is the place to have a lot of fun, go on adventurous outings and talk about cool stuff!!!

Rec & Fit

This is a great spin on healthy living, exercise and cooking. This program will teach and guide participants towards a healthier lifestyle both in the kitchen and by moving and shaking in a variety of physical activities in the building and in the community. Activities will include yoga, swimming, hiking, soccer, weights, dance and pilates. You'll learn how to cook healthy and hearty foods. Simple meal preparation to extravagant!!! Burn a few calories by being more active! This is an opportunity you can't miss!

Kidz Club

This is an opportunity within Recreation & Leisure Services for kids ages 9–12 to get together and make friends in a structured environment. The kids participate in fun and exciting activities such as scavenger hunts, arts & crafts, music therapy, and cooking. The group will periodically venture to the bowling alley and to a local gym to play sports and games!

Musical Theatre

Be sure not to miss out on our very popular theatre program! Love musicals? Love to sing and dance? From props to the set and sound, you will be involved in every aspect of this production, including being the stars! This year's Musical... ‘Around the World in 80 days!'
First stop: Winter Extravaganza, March 4th! Next stop: Broadway!

Photoscrap... Photography and Scrapbooking Combined

If you love to take photos this is the class for you. You will learn how to take captivating photos and BONUS... you'll be creating your very own memorable scrapbook as a keepsake of your talent. The class will travel to local destinations such as the beach and parks to snap beautiful photos and work on their scrapbooks at Semiahmoo House. This is a great opportunity to enjoy one of your favourite hobbies with your peers.

Rec Rockers Band

Wanna join the coolest band around? Do you dream of playing music on stage? Do you love to rock out? Come join our Music Therapist Katherine Graff and learn how to play drums, percussion, guitar, bass and keyboards, and perform for your family and friends at the Winter Extravaganza, March 4th and 5th!

Semi Famous Players Theatre

Semi-Famous Players presents another Semi-Twisted Tale that takes us on a journey through magical kingdoms as we follow some familiar heroes on a quest. As they travel through Wonderland, the Enchanted Forest, Agrabah and other lands, they meet both villains and champions, and many princesses. But will they ever find *the* princess? The Semi-Famous Players turn the Coast Capital Playhouse into the happiest place on earth in ‘This is Getting Grim!'

Sportstars

Are you interested in playing your favourite sports? Do you want to learn and enjoy indoor and outdoor sports such as volleyball, basketball, kickball, hockey and badminton? Participants will also get to have a splashing great time when swimming, as well as the opportunity to smash some pins at the bowling alley.

Bonus/Weekend Clubs

Shutter-Bugs Photography Club

This class is offered one Sunday a month for 6 months. While venturing to places like Horseshoe Bay, Granville Island or other cool places around the lower mainland, you will learn how to take amazing photos by an amazing professional photographer Eve Henry. It’s a Rec & Leisure favourite, because of the teacher, friends and the fun learning! We strongly encourage beginners to sign up for Thursday evening's photography class b/c students in Shutter-Bugs are learning advanced techniques and photo-editing.

Semi-Pro Golfers

Semi-Pro Golfers - Here's an awesome opportunity for you to hit the greens and learn how to golf by professional instructor Dave Wright. You will focus on the fundamentals: chipping, putting, bunkers, and full swing. You will also have skills competitions throughout the semester: mini-putt, long drive, chipping and closest to the pin. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to learn the basics of golf and to enhance your game! Come join us at Birdies and Buckets and give the pro's a run for their money!

Southridge Inclusionary Creative Expressions Course

This is a fun opportunity for Rec & Leisure's participants to work with art and media and hang out and get to know youth from Southridge School. If you are interested in signing up for this, there will be a place to let us know on the registration page starting Tuesday, August 31st. There is no fee for this course!

Trips

4th Annual Whistler Getaway for Adults (19 and up)
